Five Tips to Double Your Email Open Rates!
Hey! How ya doing?
Hope all is well with you and life is good!
A lot of marketers apparently are having big problems getting their emails opened and read. Hey, your product could be the best thing since sliced bread, and your sales copy the most incredible document since the Declaration of Independence!
But it doesn’t amount to a hill of beans if you don’t have an email subject line that grabs your readers rapt attention and most importantly, open your email.
So the following 5 tips are for effectively writing email subject lines that have the potential to double the open rates of your emails.
1. Personalization attracts attention!
You can get just about 2 times as many people to read your email if you address the recipient by name. This has been proven by studies measuring email open rates.
Have you ever heard your name suddenly called out in a big crowd? Did you almost break your neck looking to see who it was?
Should it not be you that the person is calling out to, I bet you still looked around as an automatic reaction, eh?
Upon hearing your name, your attention was instantly directed to the caller.
Now imagine you send out email personalized with the recipient’s name, it’s as if you called out to them in a crowd. That’s the attention getting power personalized email has over non-personalized email.
2. Subject lines should be SHORT!
K.I.S.S. – Keep It Short and Sweet! Testing has shown that subject lines consisting of 35 characters or less are far more prone to be opened than ones with longer subject lines.
Detail is not needed in the subject line, but you do need to create a sense of urgency or at least arouse the recipient’s curiousity. An example would be…
Aramis, I’m calling it quits.
or…
Could This Be Yours Leroy?
Some email programs do cut off the end of the subject line (more common than you may think), so doing this will still get the gist of your subject line through.
3. Don’t capitalize all of the words!
In the cyber world, when you use all UPPER CASE words, you will appear as if you are screaming your head off or at the very least SHOUTING!
Take for an example, if you sent a friend an email that said in the subject line:
what are your plans for tonight?
but instead you typed in:
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR TONIGHT?
Which one do you think he or she would think that you are getting in their face?
Which one do you think appears more friendlier? Sufficient reason for not having your subject line all capitalized.
If your email subject lines appear to be personal emails from family and friends, the more apt your emails will be opened.
Again, suffice to say, keep it friendly and you will have more people opening your emails, and possibly more sales to boot.
4. Using a what’s-in-it-for-me benefit to grab interest!
Including a major benefit that your readers will get when they read your email is a powerful way to get your emails opened.
Saving money, saving time, making their lives easier, these are things that catch a reader’s attention. Take this for example…
‘Wally, here’s a $97 gift just for you!’
If possible, putting the most important benefit in the beginning of your subject line will help to improve your email open rates.
5. The content of your email and the subject line should match up!
Listen, this one is a no-brainer.
If you are pulling a practical joke on a friend, this just might work. But if you are trying to sell something, don’t go fooling or tricking the customer.
Believe me, nothing irritates a person more than to have his chain yanked while being to be sold to!
So make sure the carpet matches the drapes, if you know what I mean.
In other words, if you have something such as “Barney, make $400 in 4 hours” in the subject line, you better have a darn good sales pitch to back this up, and the sooner the better in the copy.
Failing to do this can lead to your followup emails being ignored.
Don’t let your readers feel cheated and let down, trust me, they will not be in the mood to buy anything from you, let alone read your emails.
By following these simple tips, your email open rates should zoom to 30%, 40%, and even 50%, and your earnings should increase because now you’ve earned the trust of your customers.

So until next time, keep the faith and keep your eye on the ball…
